Lightning plus tree equals....

What happens when lightning like this...

Intercloud lightnings over Toulouse (France). ...Image via Wikipedia

Meets an oak tree like this....

You get this....

Here is a closer look..

The bark just exploded off the tree on one side from the top to the roots....

This poor oak tree is just out side our back gate.  The whole inside of the house lite up at the same time there was a loud explosion.  We couldn't see what happened, because as we opened the door and looked out...the dogs knocked us over coming in.
They decided they had enough nature for the night.  Not that I blamed them.  I cowered with them    calmed them in the corner of the room till the storm passed.

Wow! I'm glad it only got the side of the tree and didn't strike it through and through...it would likely have fallen over! Glad everyone is okay....

Hi Words Crafter, Yes everyone is fine. We live on 6 acres and even though it was out behind our back gate it was still about 100 feet from the house. Though I am really glad it didn't take down the back fence or land on the path to my garden. It would be a hassle moving something that big out of the way. We still have lots down due to the hurricane 2 years ago.

Wow! Crazy... I bet that was quite a sound. Oh, how I love a good storm, and we've been without for a few weeks.

My dog cowers as soon as the rain starts because she's convinced the lightning will follow! That poor tree! I'm glad it didn't strike any closer to your house!

That's dangerous. Have you ever thought of removing similar trees around your house?

This summer in the town of Wadena during a thunderstorm, lightning actually came down a chimney and struck a bed in the room it entered. It put a hole in the mattress. Fortunately no one was in the bed at the time, as it was in the afternoon.

Wow, that is both scary and gorgeous. Compared to the forces of nature we humans are just tiny :)

Saw your post on Rach Writes... Hope you'll be joining our amazing Crusade! Nice to meet you :)

Hi Brooke, I love a good storm to...from the safety of the house or porch.
Hi Rayna, After I peeled myself off the ceiling following the boom. We were fine. Now I just have to find away to remove the hand and foot prints up there.
Hi CBG, Yep, mother nature has away of getting your attention alright.
Hi Laura, I have 2 like that and some that love to get wet and play in the rain. Their not to thrilled with the thunder though.
Hi Grandpa, Most of the really big trees are not around the house itself. We did have a few but the last hurricane brought those down. Luckily all of them fell away from the house or beside it. None hit it at all. We were very lucky.
Hi Katrinka, Wow that must have been something. I sure am glad no one way injured. Jack woke up to sheet lightning going across the ceiling one time...I slept through it.
Hi Marieke, Welcome to my insanity. Mother nature loves to keep us in our places alright. I am planning to join you on your Crusade. It sounds great.

Hi Betty, Yes it is isn't it. I couldn't believe it. I found some of the bark 20 feet away in field.
