It's Hurricane season again...

Here in east Texas it has been raining for 4 days straight thanks to a hurricane named Alex who decided to visit Mexico and Texas.  The sun finally came out today and guess what?  His little sister has decided to trail behind her big brother.  She should be here tomorrow and maybe staying for the weekend.  I just hope none of their bigger relatives decide to come looking for them.  Hurricane Rita came on September 24th, 2005.  Hurricane Ike came on September 13th, 2008.  So we should be good for at least another year.  Just in case I guess I need to double check the Hurricane kit and make sure it is complete.  It's hell trying to find batteries, flashlights, weather band radios and bottles water when there is a Hurricane anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico.
At least there is a good side to all this rain.  My garden is loving it.  But then so are the weeds the Weed Demon keeps planting.  If this keeps up the weeds just might swallow us up before its dry enough to use the tractor.  The Weed Demon is sooo good at his job.  If only he would use his powers for good instead of evil.

This is what might be coming our way this weekend.  Oh well, I've still got a few books to catch up on, and a couple of crochet projects that need finishing.

Coming full circle...

Have you ever noticed how we seem to have come full circle on how we prepare the foods we eat.
Our Grandmothers and Great Grandmothers made everything from scratch.  They also grew their own gardens and preserved the bounty for later.
Our Mother's lived in the age of convince.  Canned foods, frozen dinners, and ready to make mixes.  Hamburger Helper was a Mother's best friend.  No one had time for a garden, and why go to the trouble the local store carried everything you needed. No matter what the season.  Women were freed of the need to spend hours in the kitchen fixing meals for the family.  Just check out you Mother's recipes compared to your Grandmother's and Great Grandmother's.

2 cup cooked beans versus
1 16 oz can of beans

3 tomatoes, pealed, seed removed and chopped versus 1 large can stewed tomatoes....etc.

But where our Mother's where trying to convert their Mother's recipes into what to use from a pantry of  canned goods.  This generation is trying to convert the canned goods back into cooking with fresh foods from the gardens outside their doors, or at least from the nearest Farmer's Market.
No we don't tie ourselves to the kitchen.  We have food processors to cut, microwaves to cook, fryers to fry and freezers to store.  Now we can even buy the vegetables chopped.  And meats chopped, seasoned and cooked for us.  We don't even have to do this. We are even back to making our own breads, with a bread machines help, of course.  Yep, we are all about fresh foods instead of canned.  Cutting back on sugar, salt, and chemicals.  But what if we had to do it all by hand like our Grandmothers... Yeah, I think I'll hang onto the can opener for now.  Ah, you know for nostalgic purposes.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY...

  Happy Independence Day.
You don't have to live in the United States to celebrate being an independent thinker, dreamer and leader.  The world need much more independent people and less people dependent on others for their lives and happiness.
So today everyone take the time to celebrate in your own way, your own path in this world we live in.

Does Life have an Edit button...

I was sitting here posting my Mom's recipe on my other blog, when it occurred to me what I like most about  blogging.  Well actually there are two things I love about blogging.  They are the preview button and the edit button.  I just type away think I've got everything down just like I want and hit preview.  Wait, that's not what I was thinking.  Darn it, my brain got carried away, and forgot to take my fingers with it...again.  Oh well, I can just go back and add a word here, a sentience there and check again.  Oops forgot to hit spell check again.  Well we can just fix that.  Finally after reading and fixing, hopefully less than a dozen times, it's done.  And post...YES, one more down.
But what if you post and then someone points out a mistake.  Edit to the rescue.  Bring the post back up, fix it and send it back out on it merry little way.
Then I thought wouldn't it be nice if life had preview and edit buttons.  Just think you can see exactly what was going to happen and fix any mistakes before you make them.  I know it would be great to have when your getting ready to go out somewhere, then you would know exactly what to wear.  Not like the time you wore that hot outfit for you date, only to find out you where meeting his parents. Well it did made a big impression on his Mom alright.
The edit button would be great to have to go back and fix the mistakes you made.  Like the time you asked the Lady you just meet when her baby was due, only to find out she wasn't pregnant.  Or the many times  you made a joke that bombed so bad it had you looking for the nearest exit, and contemplating becoming a hermit.
Yes an edit and a preview  would come in real handy.  But then it's the mistakes that make life memorable.  And when was the last time you shared a laugh over something that went right?  So I guess it would be a pretty boring life if we were able to make it perfect.

Is there still such a thing as an original thought?  It doesn't seem like it when you are trying to find a blog name or web domain.  You think of something type it in.  Up pops those red letter that said name is already taken please try again.  You almost feel like your at a slot machine.  You feed it names...and wait.  Red letters again and again.  Name after name.  Then just as you are about to give up...name available.  Alright you feel like you just won the lottery.  Woo hoo.  Now you can finally get started with your blog.  Yes...

Wait.  What WAS that name you just entered????
